BIRDS - NATURAL-HISTORY WATERCOLOUR

The Calling Bulbul

Pair of red whiskered bulbuls. A natural-history watercolour study.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of two red-whiskered bulbuls (Pycnonotus jocosus) perched on a slender bare twig running as a shallow diagonal across the lower third of the composition. The left bird upright and calling — bill open, throat lifted, tall pointed crest raised fully erect. The right bird lower and further back, turned away with its back and folded wing toward the viewer, head in profile, crest also raised. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes.

Heads: glossy jet-black crown drawn up into a tall forward-curving pointed crest, painted as deep neutral tint over a warm underwash so it reads black without going flat. A bright crimson-scarlet whisker patch below and behind the eye, small and jewel-like — the sharpest colour in the plate. Clean white cheek and throat left almost as bare paper, bounded by a fine black malar line running down from the bill. Slim pointed slate-black bill, open on the calling bird to show a dark gape.

Bodies: warm mid-brown upperparts and folded wings, each covert and flight feather drawn separately with a pale rim and a reserved white shaft line, deepening to dark umber toward the wingtips. Creamy white underparts with a broken dark half-collar at the breast side. Long graduated brown tail with white-tipped outer feathers, angled down and back. Small dark feet gripping the twig, toes clearly separated and wrapped around it.

Perch: a single slender bare twig, grey-brown, painted with the same botanical precision, thinning and fading to nothing before it reaches either edge of the paper. No wire, no cable, no rope, no man-made object.

Palette: jet black, crimson-scarlet, warm brown, dark umber, cream, grey-brown, ivory-white paper. Light: soft and even, slightly from the left.

Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no sky, no foliage, no background wash, no vignette, no frame, no cast shadow.

Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines.
