Sentinel on the Dead Branch
African fish eagle on a bare snag. A natural-history watercolour study.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of an adult African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) perched on a bare weathered branch, body seen from three-quarters behind, head turned sharply left into clean profile, crown and nape feathers lifted and separated by the wind. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes. Head and breast: brilliant snow-white, carried almost entirely by the bare paper and modelled only with the faintest cool grey and warm ivory glazes in the shadowed hollows. The long lanceolate hackle feathers of the crown, nape and breast each drawn as a separate pointed lance with a fine reserved white shaft, several lifting free at the back of the head against the paper. Bright chrome-yellow bare cere and facial skin around the eye, painted flat and clean. Heavy hooked bill, slate blue-grey deepening to near-black at the tip. Round amber-brown eye with a dark pupil and a single reserved white catchlight. Body and wings: deep chestnut-rufous belly, flanks and lesser coverts in warm burnt sienna glazes with a faint bronze sheen. Folded wings a deep blackish-brown, each covert and flight feather drawn separately with a soft pale rim and a reserved quill line, the longest primaries crossing over the tail and tapering to blunt dark points. Short pure white tail showing beneath the folded wing, again mostly bare paper with a dark fringe at the tip. Feet: heavy pale bone-grey tarsi and toes with strong raised scales and rough spicule texture, individually drawn, gripping the branch; long, thick, curved black talons. Perch: a bare dead branch, silver-grey and weathered, rising steeply from the lower left with a fork and a few short broken stubs, bark stripped and grain showing in fine directional strokes. Painted with the same precision as the bird and fading out on bare paper before it reaches the edge. Palette: snow white, cool grey, chrome yellow, slate blue-grey, burnt sienna, chestnut, blackish-brown, bone grey, ivory-white paper. Light: bright, clear and warm, from the front-left. Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no sky, no landscape, no background wash, no vignette, no frame, no cast shadow. Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines. NEGATIVE: (none)
