Falcon Mantling

Falcon mantling in grass. A natural-history watercolour study.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of a lanner falcon (Falco biarmicus) standing upright in dry grass, breast squared to the viewer, head lifted and turned to the upper left, wings half-open and drooped low in a mantling posture. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes.

Head: dark chocolate-brown crown sweeping back from the brow, a bold dark moustachial stripe running down from the eye, and a broad creamy-white cheek and throat between them. Large round black eye set in a saturated lemon-yellow orbital ring, painted as a clean flat band with a single reserved white catchlight in the pupil. Short deeply hooked blue-grey bill with a dark tip and a yellow-ochre cere above.

Body: soft cream and pale buff breast and belly, almost unpainted in the highlights so the white of the paper carries the light, warmed with the faintest raw sienna glazes in the shadows, a scatter of fine dark shaft-streaks on the flanks. Feathered thighs full and shaggy, drawn with long directional strokes.

Wings: folded low at the sides and slightly spread, upperwing coverts in deep charcoal and slate-brown, a crisp white scapular patch on the right shoulder, primaries barred cream and dark umber where they show, each feather separated with a reserved white quill line. Tail barely visible behind, banded in grey and cream.

Setting: a few dry grass stems and seed-heads rising around the bird in pale straw and bleached ochre, painted with the same botanical precision, thinning out and fading to bare paper toward the edges of the composition. Warm sandy earth suggested with a single pale wash at the base only.

Palette: cream, raw sienna, chocolate brown, charcoal, lemon yellow, straw ochre, ivory-white paper. Light: low, warm, from the front-left, raking across the breast.

Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no landscape, no sky, no background wash, no vignette, no frame.

Clean study plate, no prey, no blood, no carcass, nothing in the talons.

Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines.
