BIRDS - NATURAL-HISTORY WATERCOLOUR

Coming Straight On

African wood owl in flight head on. A natural-history watercolour study.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of an African wood owl (Strix woodfordii) in level flight, seen head-on and coming straight toward the viewer, both wings fully extended into a wide horizontal span, legs trailing loose beneath the body, eyes fixed forward. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes.

Face: a broad rounded facial disc in soft dove-grey and cream, ringed by a fine darker rim, the fine radiating filoplumes drawn as individual hairline strokes running outward from the eyes. Two large round liquid-dark eyes, deep brown-black, each with a single reserved white catchlight and a soft ring of pale feathering. A small neat pale ochre-yellow bill set low between them, with fine stiff bristles at its base. No ear tufts, crown smoothly rounded.

Head and body: warm chocolate and russet-brown crown and mantle scattered with small crisp white spots, each spot a reserved point of bare paper rather than an added highlight. Underparts finely barred cream and warm brown in narrow horizontal bands, each bar a separate tapering stroke. Downy feathered legs hanging below, toes relaxed and slightly curled, small dark claws.

Wings: the great span thrown out to left and right and strongly foreshortened toward the tips. Every primary and secondary separated and individually drawn — warm mid-brown webs crossed by darker sepia bars, pale creamy notches along the leading coverts, quills reserved as fine white lines, the outer primaries tapering to rounded points. Coverts on the upper wing mottled russet and cream with a few white flecks.

Palette: warm chocolate brown, russet, sepia, cream, dove grey, pale ochre-yellow, ivory-white paper. Light: soft, warm, from the front, falling evenly across the facial disc and the leading edges of both wings.

Wild bird, bare legs, no jesses, no leg rings, no bands, no straps, no falconry equipment of any kind.

Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no landscape, no sky, no ground, no rocks, no background wash, no vignette, no frame. The bird suspended on bare paper with no cast shadow.

Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines.
