Talons Reaching

Owl in flight talons reaching. A natural-history watercolour study.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of a spotted eagle-owl (Bubo africanus) in flight, caught in the braking stall a moment before landing — both wings swept high and fanned above the body, legs swung forward and down, feet open with all talons spread, head turned to the right in near profile. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes.

Head: rounded, warm tawny-brown crown flecked with small white spots, two short ear tufts lifted at the back of the head, a pale grey-white facial disc edged in a fine dark rim, large dark liquid eye with a single reserved white catchlight, small hooked ivory-yellow bill, stiff pale bristles at the base of the bill.

Body: cream and buff underparts finely barred with soft sepia cross-bars, each bar a separate tapering stroke rather than a printed pattern, warmer russet washing across the upper breast and shoulders, downy feathered legs dropping to strong scaled toes in ochre-yellow with long curved black talons.

Wings: the great fan of primaries and secondaries thrown upward, every feather separated and individually drawn — creamy white webs crossed by broad chocolate-brown bars, quills reserved as fine white lines, the outer primaries fingering apart at the tips. Coverts on the upper wing mottled tawny and cream. Tail hanging low behind, barred in the same rhythm.

Palette: cream, buff, raw sienna, chocolate brown, warm grey, ochre-yellow, ivory-white paper. Light: soft and warm from the front-right, catching the facial disc and the leading edge of the near wing.

Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no sky, no landscape, no trees, no background wash, no vignette, no frame. The bird suspended on bare paper with no cast shadow.

Wild bird, bare legs, no jesses, no leg rings, no bands, no straps, no falconry equipment of any kind.

Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines.
