Blue and Gold, One Branch
Fairy bluebird black naped oriole on a bare branch. A natural-history watercolour study.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Natural-history watercolour and gouache study of two tropical songbirds on a single bare weathered branch that snakes up the composition in a long S-curve. Upper left, a male Asian fairy-bluebird (Irena puella) perched in left profile, body angled down the branch, long tail trailing behind and below. Lower right, a black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis) perched upright and facing left, breast toward the viewer. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes. Fairy-bluebird: deep velvet-black face, throat, breast and underparts, painted as warm neutral tint over a violet underwash so the black stays luminous rather than dead. A broad band of intense iridescent ultramarine and cerulean sweeping over the crown, nape, mantle and upper tail coverts, glazed in successive transparent blue layers with the paper glowing through at the highlights, softening where it meets the black rather than stopping at a hard line. Small round crimson-red eye with a dark pupil and one reserved white catchlight. Short stout slate-grey bill. Dark feet gripping the branch. Black-naped oriole: brilliant saturated golden-yellow head, breast and belly, kept luminous with clean unmixed yellow glazes and left almost as bare paper at the highlights. A bold black band running from the bill through the eye and widening across the nape into a broad collar. Black wing edges and black on the folded primaries and tail sides, contrasting sharply with the yellow. Heavy coral-pink bill. Dark red eye. Blue-grey feet. Branch: a bare weathered hardwood limb, no leaves, curving up from the lower right and bending left, its bark drawn with fine directional strokes, small knots and split ends, a warm grey-brown of raw umber and cool grey. Painted with the same precision as the birds, its ends fading out on bare paper before reaching the edges. Palette: velvet black, ultramarine, cerulean, crimson, golden yellow, coral pink, raw umber, blue-grey, ivory-white paper. Light: soft and even, from the left. Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no foliage, no grass, no leaf litter, no background wash, no vignette, no frame, no cast shadow. Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines. NEGATIVE: (none)
