BIRDS - NATURAL-HISTORY WATERCOLOUR

Young Storks Wading

Pair of juvenile painted storks wading. A natural-history watercolour study.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Natural-history watercolour and gouache illustration of two immature painted storks (Mycteria leucocephala) standing in shallow still water, a paired study. The nearer bird angled toward the viewer with its long bill hanging straight down; the farther bird in left profile just behind and slightly overlapping, its bill held forward and level. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes.

Heads and bills: soft dusky grey-brown heads with a downy, almost velvety surface, a warm ochre-yellow wash of bare skin across the face and around the eye, small dark bead eye with a single reserved white catchlight. Long, heavy, gently decurved bills in saturated chrome and cadmium yellow, deepening to warm amber at the base, the tips tapering to fine points — the strongest colour note in the whole plate.

Necks and bodies: long grey-brown necks streaked with fine pale shaft-lines, breaking into creamy off-white breasts and bellies left almost as bare paper. Upper wings and mantle in overlapping scale-like rows of grey-brown coverts, each feather edged with a pale rim, deepening to charcoal and near-black across the folded flight feathers, with a faint warm bronze sheen on the longest tertials. Long bare legs in soft dusty pink, entering the water and disappearing.

Water: only suggested — a single pale grey-green horizontal wash where the birds meet the surface, a few soft broken ripple lines, and a loose ghosted reflection beneath fading almost immediately to bare paper. No pond, no bank, no trees, no roots, no rocks, no vegetation, no shoreline.

Palette: chrome yellow, warm ochre, grey-brown, charcoal, dusty pink, pale grey-green, ivory-white paper. Light: soft and even, slightly from the left.

Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no background wash, no landscape, no vignette, no frame.

Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines.
