Two Sparrows, Close Together
Pair of house sparrows on a wire. A natural-history watercolour study.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Natural-history watercolour and gouache study of two house sparrows (Passer domesticus) perched close together on a single slender horizontal twig crossing the lower third of the composition. On the left, a male crouched forward and low along the twig, body almost horizontal, tail lifted behind, head lowered and turned away toward the right so the nape and mantle face the viewer. On the right and touching it, a female sitting upright with her breast toward the viewer, head turned to look straight out, long tail angled down behind. Painted on unpainted white paper ground in the scientific bird-plate idiom: many thin transparent glazes, no black outlines, form built entirely from tonal value and controlled edges, individual feather barbs picked out with hairline dry-brush strokes. Male: rich chestnut-maroon mantle and nape, warming to russet across the folded wing, each covert drawn separately with a dark centre and a pale buff rim. A crisp white wing-bar crossing the coverts, reserved as clean bare paper. A dark chocolate bib visible at the lower throat, edging into pale grey-white cheeks and underparts. Soft dove-grey crown. Pale grey-white breast and belly, almost unpainted. Female: warm sandy-buff and grey-brown overall, no bib. Mantle and folded wing boldly streaked in dark umber and warm ochre, each streak a separate tapering stroke following the feather. A soft pale buff supercilium running back from behind the eye. Plain greyish-cream breast and belly carried mostly by the paper. Small dark eye with a single reserved white catchlight, stubby conical horn-grey bill. Both birds: fine pale pinkish-grey legs and feet, toes clearly separated and wrapped around the twig, small dark claws. Tails brown, each feather separated with a reserved white shaft. Perch: a single slender bare twig, pale grey-brown, running horizontally and very slightly dipping under the birds' weight, drawn with fine bark texture and thinning to nothing before it reaches either edge of the paper. No wire, no cable, no man-made object. Palette: chestnut-maroon, russet, sandy buff, dark umber, warm ochre, dove grey, grey-white, horn grey, ivory-white paper. Light: soft and even, from the left. Ground: plain white cotton-rag watercolour paper, visible cold-press tooth, no background wash, no dark ground, no vignette, no frame, no cast shadow. Museum-quality ornithological plate finish, archival, hand-painted, fine art print quality. No text, no signature, no species label, no watermark, no photographic rendering, no digital airbrush gradients, no heavy black ink outlines. NEGATIVE: (none)
