The Viaduct Against the Sun

The viaduct against the sun. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a deep city canyon seen directly into the setting sun, with a great elevated viaduct crossing the view.

Composition: a straight thoroughfare recedes in steep one-point perspective between two cliffs of building, everything silhouetted against a blazing western sky. The sky is the light source and the subject — a tall vertical wedge of almost wholly untouched cream paper, its edges eaten into by the finest graduated hatching, densest at the top of the sheet and thinning to bare paper at the horizon where the sun sits low between the towers.

The viaduct — the pivot of the plate: a massive elevated iron structure spans the full width of the street at mid-height, carried on riveted lattice girders and heavy columns, its deck edged with a balustrade and a long row of globe lamps on scrolled standards marching across the span. Drawn with the structural obsession of the Carceri — every strut, tie, rivet-plate and bracket articulated, the underside a deep coffer of shadow. It cuts the plate in two and everything beyond it is seen through and beneath it.

Flanking cliffs: enormous masonry towers rising past the top edge of the plate, cut off, presented as sheer silhouetted mass. Their faces are turned away from the light, so they read as dark bodies — but never as flat black: every one is worked in dense cross-hatching with the architecture still legible within the darkness, ranks of openings, projecting cornices, engaged piers and setbacks all discernible as tone against tone. Along their sunward edges, a thin blazing rim of untouched paper where light grazes the stone. Ornamental lamp standards project from the facades on long curved brackets at intervals down the perspective, each lamp a small burst of bare paper.

Below the viaduct: the roadway packed nose to tail with a queue of heavy covered carriages, drays and closed wagons drawn up in two files and receding into haze — panelled bodies, curved roofs, tall spoked wheels, lashed tarpaulins, coachmen small on the boxes. Nearest vehicles large and dark at the bottom edge of the plate. Their carriage lamps read as small sparks and starbursts of untouched paper scattered through the dark mass, the plate's only lights besides the sky. No motor vehicles of any kind, no wheels without spokes.

Middle distance: further towers stepping back into pale haze beyond the viaduct, reduced to flat silhouette and the lightest ruling, with a domed lantern and a slender spire breaking the skyline.

Foreground street furniture: tall iron posts, a lamp standard, a plain round disc on a bracket — all ornamental devices only, no lettering.

Figures: only a few small staffage in the shadowed pavements, in long coats and mantles, drawn in a few strokes, faces unresolved, none prominent.

Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient, no photographic tone, no lens flare, no starburst rays radiating from any light. The whole contrast range built from line density alone: bare paper for the sun, close-laid hatching for the masonry, velvety near-black beneath the viaduct — and no passage anywhere left as dead flat ink. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking.

No legible lettering anywhere — no destination boards, no route numbers, no marquee text, no parking signs, no registration plates, no numerals of any kind.

Mood: sublime, theatrical, ruinous grandeur — a colossal engineered city dissolving into light. Vertical 2:3 composition.
