The Corner Portal
The corner portal. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a single corner building at the meeting of two streets. Composition: a lone architectural monument standing at an oblique angle, its chamfered corner facing the viewer square-on, the two flanking elevations receding sharply left and right. The building occupies the upper two thirds of the plate; the lower third is an empty sweep of paving. The camera low, the corner rising above the eye — an isolated fragment presented for study, the way Piranesi presents a surviving portal or tomb. The corner mass at street level: a heavy panelled base storey, its joinery treated as dark stone ashlar, deeply shadowed and precisely jointed, with a moulded plinth and a projecting cornice above. Set into the chamfer, a tall round-arched portal — the plate's centre of gravity — its archivolt cleanly moulded, its jambs flanked by two wrought-iron lanterns on ornamental brackets. Within the arch stands a single ancient timber door, its surface flayed by weather into layer upon layer of blistered, scaling, half-lost paint and grain, every scab and split individually etched, the most minutely described object in the plate. The door stands ajar; beyond it, velvety blackness with the barest suggestion of an interior — a carved figure half-lit, a table edge dissolving into shadow. Flanking elevations: great plate-glass openings framed in the same dark joinery, treated as blank recessed bays reflecting only ruled diagonal hatching — no legible reflected scene, no figures within. Above them, projecting canvas awnings on iron arms. A slatted timber pergola runs along the top of the shopfront, its members drawn stick by stick. Upper storeys: a rendered facade of tall rectangular openings with heavy surrounds, the render fallen away in patches to expose the courses beneath, streaked with damp. Projecting over the portal, a stone balcony on scrolled corbels, carrying a wrought-iron balustrade of sinuous foliate scrollwork — drawn with the loving attention Piranesi gives to ornamental metalwork — and set behind it a tangle of overgrown potted plants and dry stems spilling through the rails. A second balcony fragment at the far left edge. Wall-mounted boxes and brackets on the flank rendered as corbelled stone blocks and blocked openings, not as machinery. Foreground: an empty cobbled roadway sweeping across the lower plate in curving courses of setts, each stone individually etched, worn and uneven, catching a raking light. A kerb of squared blocks; a row of low rounded stone bollards. A single tall iron post carrying a plain round disc. One or two tiny staffage figures at the far edge for scale, sketched in a few strokes, faces unresolved. Light: hard raking sun from the right, throwing the left flank into near-black and casting long diagonal shadows of the balcony and pergola across the render — deep shadow cutting against untouched white paper. Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient, no photographic tone. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking. No legible lettering anywhere — no shop name, no fascia text, no street plate, no window decals, no signage of any kind. Signboards and discs carry only ornamental engraved marks. No modern machinery, no vehicles, no scooters, no air-conditioning units. Mood: sublime, theatrical, ruinous grandeur concentrated into one ordinary street corner. Vertical 2:3 composition. NEGATIVE: (none)
