The Great Canyon at Dusk
The great canyon at dusk. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a colossal city canyon at twilight. Composition: a vast straight avenue recedes in steep one-point perspective from a raised terrace in the foreground toward a low bright horizon far down the street. Enormous stone-clad towers wall in both sides, rising far beyond the top edge of the plate so their summits are cut off — the viewer dwarfed, the architecture sublime and oppressive. Left flank: a monumental pier of masonry, its facade organised into unbroken vertical bays of engaged piers and recessed window ranks, storey upon storey, drawn with obsessive repetition and diminishing toward the vanishing point. Heavy rusticated base, deep cornice, ornamental spandrels. Right flank: a slabbed tenement block of endless identical windows, an external iron fire-stair zigzagging down its full height like scaffolding in the Carceri, a flagstaff projecting on a bracket. Beyond, further towers step back into haze, ending in a distant slab of glass rendered as flat parallel ruling. Foreground: a balustraded terrace and overgrown planting bed of tall grasses and flowering stems, etched in loose flicking strokes. Crowds of small staffage figures throng the terrace and the crossing below — walking, gathering, gesturing — each drawn in a few decisive strokes, none more than a fraction of the plate height, in Piranesi's manner of populating ruins with tiny onlookers. A peaked canvas awning stands at the right edge. Below, a broad crossing choked with carriages and vehicles, their lamps rendered as sparks and bursts of blank untouched paper. Ornamental lamp standards line the pavements, each lamp a small starburst of bare paper. A latticed iron viaduct crosses the avenue in the middle distance. Sky: the only breathing space in the plate — a narrow vertical wedge of near-blank cream paper between the towers, worked with fine horizontal ruling that thins to nothing at the horizon where the sun has just set, and thickens to dense tone at the top of the sheet. Technique: pure line — cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient. Velvety black in the deep street and under the cornices, cutting hard against untouched paper in the sky and every light source. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking. No legible lettering anywhere: shopfronts, street signs and banners carry only ornamental engraved marks. No flags of any nation, no emergency lights, no recognisable logos. Mood: sublime, theatrical, ruinous grandeur — a modern canyon seen as an antique ruin. Vertical 2:3 composition. NEGATIVE: (none)
