The Old Lane
Old city lane. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, depicting a narrow crowded lane in an old walled city, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper. Composition: steep one-point perspective plunging down a paved alley that narrows toward a bright haze at the far end. A tall masonry wall fills the left third, its plaster fallen away to expose rubble stone and brick, streaked with damp and shadow. On the right, tenement facades rise four storeys and crowd inward — deep balconies on corbelled brackets, tiers of louvered timber shutters, iron railings, sagging awnings, and a heavy projecting cornice. Buildings exaggerated in height and mass so the figures below are dwarfed by architecture, in Piranesi's manner. Foreground: seen from behind, a lone elderly man in a loose long coat and cloth head-wrap rides a black bicycle away from the viewer, hunched over the bars, his weight on one pedal. Middle distance: a rider on a small motor scooter approaches head-on, single headlamp blazing as a burst of blank white paper against dense hatching. Behind him, the boxy canopy of a covered three-wheeled cart, and a row of parked machines shoved against the right-hand wall. All figures small, quickly drawn staffage — sketched with a few decisive strokes rather than portrait detail. Vertical incident: a tall iron post rises through the left of the frame carrying a hanging rectangular signboard, its lettering rendered as ornamental engraved capitals of no legible language, with a long arrow beneath. From the post a chaotic tangle of slack cables loops and swags across the alley overhead — drawn like the heavy ropes and chains of the Carceri, coiling and dropping in dark curves against the pale sky. Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stippling and flick-work; no flat tone, no colour, no gradient washes. Velvety near-black shadow in the arcades and under the balconies, cutting hard against untouched white paper in the sky and headlamp. Stonework given individual chiselled blocks, crumbling edges, weeds and creepers sprouting from cracks and parapets. Sky left largely blank with a few thin horizontal etched lines. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, a visible plate mark at the border. Aged, printed, slightly uneven inking. Mood: sublime, theatrical, ruinous grandeur imposed on an ordinary working street. Vertical 2:3 composition. NEGATIVE: (none)
