Beneath the Gantry
Rickshaws beneath the gantry. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a congested street in a crowded old city. Composition: shallow and packed, the near field crowded with great worn vehicles like antique fragments dragged into the road, the middle distance dissolving into a press of small figures, the far distance closed off by leaning buildings — no open horizon, no escape. The plate reads as an excavation site rather than a vista. Foreground right: an enormous three-wheeled hand-drawn carriage seen from behind, filling nearly half the plate height. Its rear panel is a broad sheet of beaten metal treated as a carved relief cartouche — worn ornamental devices, trident-like emblems, scrolling foliate borders, an incised numeral, the surface dented, scratched and blistered, drawn with the loving decay Piranesi gives to antique marble. Above it a canopy of sagging patched canvas stretched on a bent iron frame, its ribs and stays articulated like the timberwork of a ruin. A tall spoked wheel below, every spoke individually etched, its fender bent and papered over. Foreground left of centre: a second identical carriage, slightly further off, its rear panel likewise an embossed plaque, its canopy patched and torn. Seated passengers seen from behind as dark silhouetted masses; a driver's white head just visible against the canvas. Left foreground: a porter walking away from the viewer, a vast bundled sack slung across his shoulders on a strap, a cloth knotted at his neck, sagging bags in his lowered hand — his back to the plate, his weight thrown forward. Behind and around, a press of small staffage figures in loose garments, each drawn in a few decisive strokes, faces unresolved and turned away or lost in shadow. Overhead: a great horizontal signboard slung on iron brackets spans the full width of the upper plate, carried on a pole to the left — a heavy tablet like a Roman inscription slab, bearing only ornamental engraved marks and directional arrows, no legible language. Below and beside it, smaller hanging boards and brackets project from the facades at every angle. From every pole and eave a chaotic tangle of slack cables loops and swags across the street — drawn like the ropes, chains and cordage of the Carceri, coiling, knotting and dropping in dark curves against the pale sky. Background: brick and rendered buildings pressed close, three and four storeys, plaster fallen to expose the courses beneath, projecting balconies, shuttered openings, awnings and tarpaulins strung between them, weeds sprouting from the parapets. Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient. Velvety black in the canopy interiors and beneath the vehicles, cutting hard against untouched white paper in the sky and the sunlit road. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking. No legible lettering anywhere — every sign, plaque and panel carries ornamental engraved marks only. No personal names, no telephone numbers, no shop names, no registration numbers. Mood: sublime, theatrical, ruinous grandeur pressed into an ordinary working street. Vertical 2:3 composition. NEGATIVE: (none)
