The Throng Below the Citadel
The throng below the citadel. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a steep thronged street rising toward a fortress on a rock. Composition: a classic veduta. The lower third of the plate is a dense throng of small figures crossing and receding up the street; the middle is a canyon of tall stone tenements closing in from both sides; the upper third is crowned by a mass of battlemented towers, crow-stepped gables and a lead-domed cupola, drawn larger and higher than true scale so the citadel presides over the whole plate. Sky reduced to a narrow pale wedge of near-blank paper, worked with the thinnest horizontal ruling. Left flank: a colossal wall of ashlar masonry rising out of the plate, its lower courses deeply rusticated and shadowed. Across its upper storeys, a great timber scaffold — tier upon tier of poles, ledgers, braces and ladders, with loose canvas sheeting slung across it and bellying in the wind, ropes hanging slack — drawn with the structural obsession of the Carceri, every member individually etched. Below, gabled tenement fronts step down the hill in receding planes, each with tall mullioned openings, corbelled chimney stacks, and iron trade signs projecting on scrolled brackets bearing ornamental devices only. Right flank: a continuous cliff of tenements, five and six storeys, ranks of identical openings repeating down the perspective with obsessive regularity, punctuated by a pointed traceried window, buttresses, and stone chimney heads bristling along the roofline against the sky. Crowning the view: the citadel — squat battlemented towers, arrow slits, a stepped-gabled hall block, and a bell-shaped lead cupola on a lantern — set on rising ground, its masonry weathered and streaked, drawn in slightly softer tone than the near buildings to hold it back in atmosphere while keeping it monumental. Bare flagstaffs rise from the parapets, their pennants absent. The throng: hundreds of small staffage figures filling the lower street, drawn in Piranesi's manner — a few decisive strokes each, faces unresolved, most seen from behind or in profile, gathered in loose knots and streaming uphill. All clothed in long coats, mantles, cloaks and wide hats of no fixed period; no modern garments, no rucksacks, no printed cloth, no logos. Nearest figures largest and most shadowed at the very bottom edge, dissolving into pure hatching as they recede. Street surface: a broad cobbled way of curving sett courses climbing the hill, each stone individually etched, worn and glistening, with a gutter channel running down the centre. Street furniture: a tall iron post carrying a plain round disc; a lantern standard; a low bollard. No lettering on any of them. Light: flat, high, overcast — the sky nearly blank paper, the shadows soft-edged but deep in the closes and under the eaves; no hard sun, no cast diagonals. Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient, no photographic tone and no shallow-focus blur. Everything in the plate equally sharp, near and far alike, resolved by density of line rather than focus. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking. No legible lettering anywhere — no shop fascias, no hanging sign text, no banners, no traffic plates, no flags of any nation. All boards and discs carry ornamental engraved marks only. Mood: sublime, theatrical grandeur — an antique capital seen on a working day. Vertical 2:3 composition. NEGATIVE: (none)
