The Gutter View

The gutter view. An etched veduta after the manner of Piranesi.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
An 18th-century copperplate etching in the manner of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, rendered entirely in warm brown-black etching ink on cream laid paper, depicting a narrow street seen from almost ground level, with the sun setting at its far end.

Viewpoint: the plate is taken from the height of the roadway itself, the eye barely above the kerb. The lower half is given over entirely to the road surface, sweeping diagonally across the sheet in strong receding perspective — worn stone paving in long courses, patched and sunken, seamed with repairs, a broad channelled gutter running along a squared kerb of heavy blocks, and a carved iron drain grating set into the stone. Every slab individually etched, the surface catching a hard raking light. This foreground is the largest and most minutely described passage in the plate.

Left flank: a receding wall of monumental masonry — a rusticated ground storey with deep-cut joints, engaged pilasters, carved consoles and a heavy modillioned cornice, tall openings repeating storey upon storey and diminishing sharply toward the vanishing point. Ornamental iron lanterns hang from long scrolled brackets that reach out over the street, one after another down the perspective, each lamp a small burst of untouched white paper.

Ranked along that wall, receding away from the viewer: a long file of covered carriages and carts drawn up nose to tail against the kerb — bodied wagons with panelled sides, curved roofs, tall spoked wheels, shafts down, tarpaulins lashed over their loads. Nearest one large and dark at the left edge, the file dwindling into hatching. Further off, a great high-sided box wagon stands squarely in the roadway, its tailboard down, its canvas tilt bright against the shadow. No motor vehicles of any kind, no wheels without spokes.

Right flank and centre: an enormous mass of foliage fills the upper right of the plate — full-crowned trees pressing in over the street, their leaves rendered in Piranesi's flicked crescent strokes and dense clotted stipple, branches structural beneath, the whole crown backlit and dissolving at its upper edge into pure blank paper where the sun burns through. Beneath the trees, the street runs on toward the light. Below and right, a colonnaded shopfront with projecting canvas awnings and iron sign brackets carrying ornamental devices only.

Far distance: the street opens to a blaze of low sun — an area of wholly untouched paper, its edges eaten into by the finest hatching, from which the buildings and foliage emerge as silhouette. Everything reads against that light.

Figures: a handful of small staffage only — two walking on the right pavement, one crossing in the middle distance, all in long coats and mantles of no fixed period, drawn in a few decisive strokes, faces unresolved, none nearer than the middle ground.

Technique: pure line — dense cross-hatching, parallel burin strokes, stipple and flick-work; no colour, no flat wash, no gradient, no photographic tone, no lens flare and no shallow-focus blur. Everything equally sharp near and far, resolved by density of line rather than by focus. Velvety black beneath the carriages and in the left arcade, cutting hard against untouched paper in the sky and the sun. Fine paper grain, faint foxing, visible plate mark at the border, slightly uneven inking.

No legible lettering anywhere — no shop names, no fascia text, no hanging sign text, no traffic plates, no numbers. All boards and discs carry ornamental engraved marks only.

Mood: sublime, theatrical grandeur seen from the gutter — an ordinary street given the scale of a ruin. Vertical 2:3 composition.
