Duel on the High Ridge
Young ibex rearing on an alpine ridge. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic wildlife oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American animal painters — the mountain-game studies of that school. Two young Alpine ibex meet on a steep grassy ridge high above a snow-streaked valley at golden hour, one reared fully upright in a sparring challenge, the other standing braced with its head lowered toward him. Left subject: a young ibex balanced entirely on its hind legs, body stretched vertical and held in clean side profile facing right. Both forelegs are folded up and tucked in tight beneath the chest, dark lower legs and small black cloven hooves hanging. The neck is upright and the head level, muzzle in profile, dark eye catching a spark of light, small ear set back, a short dark beard just forming at the chin, and dark markings running down the face. Horns rise from the crown and sweep up and back in a strong even arc, thick at the base and tapering to points, the front faces broken by a row of raised transverse ridges. The coat is thick and woolly and in ragged mid-moult — pale buff-cream across the back, shoulder and flank with loose tufts lifting along the spine and belly line, shading to darker grey-brown on the legs and rump. Right subject: a second, heavier ibex standing on the ridge at upper right, front legs braced apart on the slope, head dropped low and turned so its long ridged horns sweep back and present toward the reared animal. Grey-brown coat, pale muzzle, partly cropped by the right edge of the frame and held slightly softer in focus. Ridge: a steep bank of alpine turf running diagonally from lower left up to the right, dark green cushioned vegetation, low woody shrubs, and dry seed-headed grass stems catching the light in fine bright threads along the skyline edge. A weathered pale limestone outcrop breaks through at lower left with a few small purple alpine flowers at its base. The lower right corner falls away into deep out-of-focus green shadow. Background: a broad pale blue sky filling the upper half, clear and gradient, warming toward the horizon. Behind and to the left, the flank of a high mountain — warm pink-tan rock streaked and patched with old snow, entirely dissolved into soft hazy atmosphere with no hard edges anywhere. Light: low golden sun from behind and to the right. The reared ibex is strongly rim-lit, its woolly coat glowing along the back, chest and belly in a halo of warm gold where the light passes through the loose fleece, while the body's core stays in warm shadow. Grass stems along the ridge edge flare bright against the sky. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the reared animal's head, horn ridges, eye and the lit fringe of its coat; increasingly loose, gestural, drybrush and palette-knife handling through the body, the ridge vegetation and the rock. The mountain and sky laid in as thin, broad, transparent scumbles with no detail whatsoever. Lost-and-found edges where the shadowed flank meets the dark turf. Heavy impasto on the rim-lit fleece and the flaring grass heads. Warm restrained palette — golds, buffs, olive greens — against a cool pale sky. Reared animal placed left of centre and reading almost as a silhouette-with-halo against the open sky. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no ear tags, no collars, no radio or tracking equipment, no fences or buildings, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no domestic goat, no fantasy elements, no blood. NEGATIVE: (none)
