The Herd Breaks the Shallows
Pony herd breaking through shallow water. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic wildlife oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American animal painters — the herd studies of that school. A band of small, hardy, unshod ponies gallops through the shallow flooded margin of a pond, coming forward and slightly left toward the viewer, throwing up a wall of white spray. Subjects: eight ponies, compact and stocky rather than elegant — short strong legs, deep barrels, thick necks, broad foreheads, small ears, and shaggy upright manes blown back by the run. No tack, no bridles, no ropes, no riders. One dark bay leads at the left, slightly separated from the group, near foreleg reaching forward and lifted clear of the water, head low and forward, dark eye catching light, black mane standing up in a ragged crest, water beading across its wet shoulder. Beside it a smaller young bay, half its size, straining to keep pace. To the right, the main cluster presses together: a pale cream-white pony with a dark mane, two rich chestnut-bay ponies pushing to the front, a dun and a grey half-hidden behind, heads at slightly different heights, some faces turned toward the viewer and some away. Overlapping bodies, a forest of legs, coats soaked dark and glossy along the flanks. Water: a violent churn of white foam and broken water bursting around every leg, thrown forward in sheets and scattered into hundreds of frozen droplets across the lower half of the frame. Beyond the herd the pond flattens into still olive-brown water occupying the foreground bottom third, carrying soft broken reflections of the animals and the bank. Setting: behind the herd a broad rise of vivid cropped green pasture, simplified to a smooth sweep of tone. Across the upper third a dense dark tree line of humid subtropical foliage and tangled scrub, massed and mostly unresolved, with one taller pale-trunked tree breaking the skyline at the left. No sky visible. Light: soft diffuse overcast daylight, humid and slightly cool. No hard shadows. Value drama comes from the brilliant white spray and the pale cream pony set against the dark wet coats and the deep green mass behind. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the two or three leading heads, their eyes, muzzles and forelegs; increasingly loose, gestural, palette-knife and drybrush handling through the rear of the herd, the water and the background. Lost-and-found edges where dark wet flanks meet the green bank. Thick impasto for the crests of foam and the brightest droplets, thin scumbles for the still water and the far trees. Broad directional strokes across the pasture. Restrained naturalistic palette, greens held slightly desaturated so the animals carry the picture. Herd placed just below centre with the horizon high and open water in front. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no riders, no saddles, bridles, halters or ropes, no fences or buildings, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no fantasy elements, no blood. NEGATIVE: (none)
