The Thief at the Bowl
Ring tailed lemur over a bowl. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic animal oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American wildlife painters — the primate studies of that school. A ring-tailed lemur crouches low over a shallow dish of chopped fruit and greens, head dropped almost to the food but eyes lifted straight into the viewer's, caught mid-approach. Subject: the lemur fills the upper two thirds of the frame, body hunched and shoulders raised, head lowered and square to the viewer in full frontal view. The face is the focal point — a white mask around a long tapering charcoal-grey muzzle, ending in a broad black leathery nose with a warm rust glow inside the nostrils. Two large round eyes, brilliant amber-orange with fine radial striations and a small dark pupil, set inside sharp black teardrop eye patches. A dark grey band runs up the forehead and over the crown between tall, upright, white-furred ears that are edged in grey and tufted at the tips. Long pale whiskers spray forward from the muzzle and cheeks. Dense soft dove-grey fur across the crown, shoulders and back, warming to grey-brown along the spine, with a white ruff at the throat. One long slender forelimb reaches out to the left across the frame, ending in a small dark hand with long thin fingers and pale nails resting near the edge of the dish. The far shoulder and haunch bulk out to the right. Foreground: a shallow round steel dish occupying the lower third, its rim catching a thin cool metallic highlight, heaped with cut food — chunky cubes of bright golden-orange mango and squash forming the brightest note, a wedge of deep magenta red cabbage, dark maroon beetroot, pale green spinach and chard leaves, thin pale cucumber rounds, a pink-skinned apple slice, and several long pale-green stalk batons crossing over the pile. The dish rests on a plain pale stone ledge that runs across the very bottom of the frame. Background: a dark, softly massed field of deep green foliage, entirely unresolved, dropping toward black at the left and top. In the upper right corner a cool blue passage glows out of the shadow. Light: bright natural daylight from the front and slightly above, striking the face, ears and the heaped food. Shadowed elsewhere. Very strong value contrast — the white face mask and the golden fruit are the two brightest passages and the background is held deep and dark behind them. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the eyes, muzzle, nose, whiskers and ear tufts; looser, gestural handling through the body fur; and broad, confident, thickly loaded palette-knife strokes for the food, where each piece is stated as one or two decisive marks rather than described. Background laid in as thin transparent scumbles with no detail whatsoever. Lost-and-found edges where the grey coat meets the dark foliage. Heavy impasto on the fruit, the metal rim and the catchlights in the eyes. Restrained palette overall — cool greys and deep greens — with the fruit carrying the only saturated colour. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no hands, no collar or tag, no visible tail, no cage bars, wire, fencing or man-made structures beyond the dish and ledge, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no anthropomorphic expression, no fantasy elements. NEGATIVE: (none)
