Chasing Nothing
Blue merle collie airborne after a bubble. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic animal oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American sporting and wildlife painters — the dog studies of that school. A rough-coated blue merle Border Collie is caught fully airborne at the top of a leap, body reared into a near-vertical twist against a deep shadowed hedge, head turned up and to the right in pursuit of a single drifting soap bubble. Subject: the dog is completely clear of the ground with all four feet in the air. The body is stretched upright and slightly torqued, chest rotated toward the viewer while the head stays in three-quarter profile facing right. Both forelegs are folded and tucked in tight beneath the chest, paws hanging loose with the wrists relaxed and pale toe-pads just showing. The hind legs trail down and back, one extended nearly straight below, the other bent, and a long plumed tail hangs low and streaming to the left. Coat: long, fine, wind-lifted double coat. A broad white blaze up the muzzle and forehead, wide white ruff and chest, white forelegs; dark charcoal ear patches and eye patches; and across the saddle, flank and hindquarters a true blue merle pattern — cool silver-grey mottled and marbled with irregular soft-edged black patches, never crisply spotted. Individual guard hairs and feathering catch the light along the ruff, chest and tail edge. Warm amber eye, black nose, mouth slightly open showing a hint of pink tongue and white teeth, long whiskers picked out against the dark background. Narrative: one small transparent soap bubble floats near the dog's shoulder at the lower left, catching a thin ring of highlight and a pale reflection on its curve. A faint scatter of tiny airborne motes and droplets sparks in the light around the head. Setting: a dense wall of dark glossy evergreen laurel foliage fills most of the frame, leaves broadly massed and largely unresolved, dropping into near-black in the corners. Behind and to the upper right, a pale grey dressed-stone wall glows softly out of the shadow. Along the far left edge, the weathered upright of a bare wooden post. The lower third is dark mown lawn in deep shadow, simplified to a flat cool green mass. Light: low warm evening sun raking in from the right. It rims the muzzle, ruff, chest and tail feathering in bright warm light while the merle saddle and the whole background fall into cool deep shadow. Very strong value contrast — the white ruff is the brightest passage in the picture and carries the composition. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the head, eye, muzzle, whiskers and the lit edge of the ruff; increasingly loose, gestural, drybrush and palette-knife handling through the merle coat, the hedge, the grass and the shadowed corners. Long directional strokes following the flow and lift of the feathering. Lost-and-found edges where the dark saddle disappears into the dark hedge. Thick impasto on the lit ruff, the bubble's highlight and the sparking motes; thin transparent scumbles for the mass of foliage. Restrained cool palette — greens desaturated, whites warm — with the dog placed left of centre and open dark space to the right for the direction of the leap. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no collar, harness, lead or tags, no toys or balls, no houses or fences beyond the single post, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no fantasy elements. NEGATIVE: (none)
