Cougar, Full Face
Cougar snarling close portrait. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic wildlife oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American big-cat painters — the cougar studies of that school. A mature cougar fills the centre of the frame in close portrait, head square to the viewer and slightly tilted, jaws parted in a low warning snarl, body angling away to the right. Head: broad and rounded, the face tawny fawn shading to grey-buff across the crown, with a dark bar over each brow and a fine dark tear-line running from the inner corner of each eye down the muzzle. Two sharply defined black patches flank the muzzle on either side of a broad pink-brown nose, with clean white fur on the muzzle, chin and throat between and below them. The eyes are narrowed and hooded — dark, alert, tightened at the corners rather than wide — set beneath a furrowed brow. Ears upright and rounded, tawny-backed with pale fur inside, one canted slightly outward. The mouth is open in a snarl: cream-ivory upper canines and lower canines, small incisors between, red-pink gums and tongue, the dark lip line drawn back and the whisker pads bunched. Long white whiskers spray wide on both sides in a broad fan, rising from dark spotted whisker pads, each one a single decisive stroke. Body: thick powerful neck and a heavy shoulder rising behind, dense short tawny-brown coat with a soft grey cast over the shoulder, and a clean pale cream chest and throat. The body recedes to the right and is held noticeably softer than the head, dissolving toward the frame edge. Background: high-key and almost entirely abstract — broad pale masses of cream and grey-white rock, wholly unresolved, with a darker slanting shadow band running down the left side and a deep grey rock mass at the right edge. No detail anywhere, no horizon, no vegetation. Light: cool, soft, diffuse daylight with strong pale bounce coming back off the rock. No hard shadows. Value drama comes from the warm tawny head and the dark eyes, nose and open mouth read against the bright, near-white surround — the reverse of a dark-ground picture, the subject sitting darker than its background. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the face — eyes, brow, muzzle patches, nose, the open jaws and teeth, and the whiskers; increasingly loose, gestural, drybrush handling through the neck and shoulder; the background laid in as broad, thin, transparent scumbles of pale colour with no description at all. Lost-and-found edges where the pale chest fur meets the pale rock. Impasto reserved for the whiskers, the lit brow and muzzle, the teeth and the catchlights. Restrained palette — warm fawn, buff and grey against cream-white — with the pink nose and gums as the only warm accents. Head placed centrally in the left-of-middle third, body running out to the right. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no fences, mesh, bars or man-made structures, no collars or tags, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or anthropomorphic expression, no domestic cat proportions, no 3D-render look, no fantasy elements, no blood, no prey. NEGATIVE: (none)
