Over the Green Corn
Roe buck airborne over spring crop. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Dramatic wildlife oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American animal painters — the field studies of that school. A European roe deer buck caught fully airborne in strict side profile, suspended above a green spring cereal field under a wide pale sky, moving left to right. Subject: the buck is completely clear of the ground with all four feet off the earth, body stretched horizontally at the peak of a bound. The hind legs are folded sharply at the hock and thrown up and back behind the rump, black hooves close together and pointing rearward. The forelegs are tucked and angled down and forward beneath the chest, slim dark cannon bones and small black cloven hooves clearly separated. The rump carries a bright cream-white caudal patch. The head is held level and forward, muzzle slightly lifted, black nose glossy, large dark eye, ears erect and turned forward. Small roe antlers — short, upright, three-tined, roughly the length of the ears, with a rough pearled texture near the base. Coat warm russet-gold across the neck, shoulder and lit upper flank, shading to cool grey-brown along the belly and lower body, with a pale throat and inner-leg cream. Setting: a low horizon sitting just below the middle of the frame. Foreground is a field of young green cereal crop, individual upright blades catching light along the near edge and dissolving into a soft continuous green mass as it recedes, with faint tractor tramlines running to the right. At the left edge, a blurred stand of pale bare trees and dry reeds, warm buff and mauve, dissolved almost entirely into atmosphere. Sky is a broad flat wash of pale blue-grey warming toward a faint peach glow near the horizon, no clouds, no detail. Light: low warm evening sun from the right, striking the buck's face, neck and chest and rimming the top of the back and antlers in gold, with the underside and near flank falling into cool shadow. Strong warm-cool contrast between the golden animal and the cool sky behind it. Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the head, antlers, eye, chest and lower legs; increasingly loose, gestural, drybrush and palette-knife handling through the body's trailing edge, the crop field and the background trees. Lost-and-found edges along the shadowed underbelly where the animal meets the field. Crisp impasto notes on the lit rim of the back, the rump patch and the near blades of crop. Thin scumbled washes for the sky. Restrained naturalistic palette. Animal placed left of centre with generous open sky to the right for the direction of travel. No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no buildings or fences, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no fantasy elements, no blood. NEGATIVE: (none)
