The Sideways Strike

Tiger striking sideways in green water. Painted in the dramatic wildlife oil tradition.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Dramatic wildlife oil painting in the tradition of mid-century American big-cat painters — the action work of that school. A mature Bengal tiger has risen chest-high out of a broad green river pool, torso lifted almost upright and twisted, one foreleg swung out sideways in a heavy sweeping strike that throws water across the frame.

Subject: the tiger's body rises from the water at roughly waist height, submerged from the lower chest down, the near shoulder and flank turned toward the viewer so the full run of stripes across the ribs and shoulder is visible. The head is lifted and turned to the right in near-profile, muzzle raised, eyes squeezed shut against the flying water, brow furrowed, ears laid back and low with one dark ear showing a pale rear spot. Long white whiskers fan out from the muzzle, each carrying beads of water. The near foreleg is extended out and to the right, almost horizontal, powerful forearm muscle visible under soaked fur, the paw curled downward at the end of the swing with dark pads showing and claws sheathed. The far foreleg stays low and mostly hidden in the churn. Deep rufous-orange coat with a warm gold cast where the sun strikes, cream-white chest and throat, bold soft-edged black stripes broken and darkened where the wet fur clumps into points along the neck and shoulder.

Water: a violent burst of white foam and broken water at the tiger's chest where the body meets the surface, and a long whipping arc of individual frozen droplets trailing up and out to the right from the swinging paw, scattering across the upper right of the frame. Concentric ripples and disturbed wash spreading outward. Beyond the animal the pool settles into a broad, calm, softly rippled surface.

Setting: the water fills the entire frame — warm olive-green shading to gold where sunlight strikes the surface and cooling to deep bottle-green in the shadowed upper corners. No bank, no horizon, no vegetation, no sky. The ground exists only to throw the lit animal forward.

Light: strong warm sunlight from the upper right, catching the raised muzzle, the whiskers, the top of the shoulder and the crest of every droplet, while the near flank falls into cooler shadow. Warm-against-cool contrast between the golden-orange animal and the green water.

Technique: oil on linen. Tight, controlled, high-detail rendering of the head, whiskers, striking forelimb and paw; increasingly loose, gestural, palette-knife and drybrush handling through the flank, the foam and the open water. Lost-and-found edges where wet fur meets spray. Thick impasto flecks for the brightest droplets and the crest of the foam; long horizontal scumbled strokes for the calm water. Visible directional brushwork throughout the background. Strong tonal contrast, restrained naturalistic palette. Animal placed left of centre, occupying the middle third of the frame, with open water above and the droplet arc leading the eye to the upper right.

No text, no watermark, no signature, no border, no frame, no human figures, no photographic gloss, no HDR, no oversaturated neon orange, no cartoon or 3D-render look, no fantasy elements, no blood, no prey animal.
