The Raft
Waterfowl raft. A Nordic field watercolour.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: A loose plein-air watercolour and gouache painting on cold-pressed rag paper depicting a raft of Canada geese and mallard ducks resting on calm open water under flat overcast Nordic light. Composition: a horizontal band of still water filling the full frame, no horizon line and no sky. Three or four Canada geese occupy the lower foreground at near-full size, bodies in profile facing right and left, long black necks rising vertically, white cheek patches catching the light. Behind them, geese and mallards recede in loose diagonal ranks, progressively smaller, softer and less resolved, until the most distant birds are little more than dark commas and warm smudges on the water. A blurred band of dark riverbank vegetation compressed into a single wet-in-wet green-brown wash across the very top edge. Ornithological accuracy: Canada geese with black neck stockings, white chinstrap, pale buff breast, warm sepia flanks with fine pale feather barring, dark scapulars, white undertail at the waterline. Mallard drakes with iridescent bottle-green heads, chrome-yellow bills, grey vermiculated flanks, chestnut breast; mallard hens in mottled tawny brown. Correct proportion, posture and bill geometry throughout — a working field artist's knowledge of anatomy, not stylised cartooning. Technique: transparent wet-in-wet washes with soft bleeding edges, granulating pigment settling into the paper tooth, hard-edged dry-brush accents reserved only for the nearest heads, bills and folded wing coverts. Deliberate unpainted white paper left inside the birds' pale flanks and along the water. Reflections rendered as vertical broken drags of dilute colour directly beneath each bird. Water surface suggested with a few horizontal ripple strokes and long areas of near-empty flat wash. Economical brushwork, visible paper grain, no outlines, no ink work. Palette: muted and cool — slate blue-grey, warm ochre, raw umber, payne's grey, soft olive, warm sepia, with a single restrained note of viridian on the drakes' heads and a touch of cadmium yellow on their bills. Overall low-saturation, atmospheric, dampness in the air. Mood: quiet, observational, unhurried. A page from a naturalist's field sketchbook rather than a finished gallery piece. NEGATIVE: no photorealism, no digital airbrush smoothness, no HDR, no vivid saturated colour, no sunset or golden hour, no sky, no people, no boats, no buildings, no text, no watermark, no signature, no heavy black outlines, no cartoon or vector flat-fill styling, no fused or malformed bills and feet, no extra or missing limbs.
