Stilts on the Mudbank

Two stilts on a mudbank. A Nordic field watercolour.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
A loose plein-air watercolour and gouache painting on cold-pressed rag paper depicting two black-and-white stilts standing together on a low pale bank at the edge of shallow still water, in soft warm diffused light.

Composition: horizontal format, low viewpoint close to the birds' own eye level. The two birds stand overlapping just right of centre, both in profile facing right, one slightly behind and above the other, their bodies nearly touching so the black wings read almost as a single dark mass broken by a white wedge between them. The nearer bird's long black tail and folded primaries extend far back to the left, well beyond its body. The upper half of the sheet is out-of-focus pale water, crossed by a few broad soft horizontal bands of olive-gold reflection that dissolve at the edges. The lower right quarter is the pale bank itself — a flat sunlit shelf of mud and grit rising from the bottom edge, its far lip cutting a soft horizontal against the water, its surface carrying a scatter of tiny warm ochre and rust specks of debris, all held blurred and unresolved. No horizon, no sky, no vegetation.

Ornithological accuracy: black-winged stilts. Slender elegant build, small rounded white head with a fine dusky wash on the hindneck, brilliant crimson-red iris in a small dark eye, a very long needle-fine straight black bill roughly twice the head length and tapering to a point. Glossy black mantle and upperwing on one bird, browner and paler on the other, contrasting hard against a pure white neck, breast and underparts. Long tail and folded wingtips projecting well past the body. Extremely long, thin, unfeathered coral-pink legs, held straight. Correct stilt proportions — the legs and bill are the identifying features and must not be shortened or thickened. A working field artist's anatomy, not stylised cartooning.

Technique: transparent wet-in-wet washes with granulating pigment settling into the paper tooth. The whole upper water field laid as one large soft wash with the olive-gold reflection bands floated in wet-into-wet so they bleed at every edge and never harden. The bank painted as a single pale warm wash with a few dry-brush drags and small flicked specks for the debris. Deliberate unpainted white paper reserved across the birds' heads, necks and underparts, modelled only with dilute cool grey shadow so the white reads as light rather than as paint. The black upperparts built in warm transparent glazed darks — layered umber and indigo, never flat opaque black — with the feather ranks suggested by two or three dry-brush strokes only. Hard-edged accents reserved exclusively for the bills, the two red eyes, the leading edge of the folded wing and the legs. Visible paper grain, no outlines, no ink work.

Palette: high-key and warm-neutral — pearl white, pale warm grey, soft olive and muted gold in the water, warm putty and buff on the bank; deep transparent indigo-brown for the wings; with two small saturated notes only, crimson at the eyes and coral-pink on the legs. Overall low-saturation, soft flat light, no cast shadows.

Mood: poised, still, companionable. A page from a naturalist's field sketchbook rather than a finished gallery piece.

NEGATIVE:
no photorealism, no digital airbrush smoothness, no HDR, no vivid saturated colour, no horizon line, no sky, no reeds or grasses, no people, no boats, no buildings, no text, no watermark, no signature, no heavy black outlines, no flat opaque black, no cartoon or vector flat-fill styling, no opaque white gouache on the plumage, no shortened or thickened legs, no short or curved bills, no fused or malformed legs, no extra limbs, no incorrect stilt anatomy.
