Three Whooper Swans, Grey Water

Three whooper swans on a grey northern lake. A Nordic field watercolour.

How this was made

This piece began with a written instruction alone, with no photograph. The instruction is kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
A Nordic field watercolour of three whooper swans drifting on a grey northern lake beneath low cloud, painted outdoors in a loose, quick field-sketch manner: wet-in-wet washes for the heavy sky and the dark water, crisp dry-brush marks for the swans' white plumage and black-and-yellow bills, a thin band of birch shoreline in the distance, reflections broken by small ripples. Muted palette of slate, pale ochre and grey-green, soft overcast light, white paper showing through in places. No text, no signature, no border.

NEGATIVE:
(none)
