Winter Quay
Gulls on a winter quay. A Nordic field watercolour.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: A loose plein-air watercolour and gouache painting on cold-pressed rag paper depicting a small group of gulls standing on a weathered stone quay edge on a cold, still, fog-white winter day. Composition: vertical format, low viewpoint almost level with the birds' feet. The lower third is the pale scuffed stone of the quay, running away from the viewer in steep perspective toward the upper right, its edge cutting a long diagonal against flat grey water on both sides. Six or seven gulls stand along it, overlapping — one large in the centre foreground in three-quarter view with its head turned to the right, one at the left in profile facing right, one at the right in profile facing right, and three or four more compressed behind them at smaller scale and lower resolution. The upper two thirds of the sheet is empty white mist — no horizon, no sun, no cloud form — through which a scatter of eight or ten gulls in flight are indicated at varying distance and sharpness, the nearest a legible wing shape, the furthest only a dark comma. Along the middle distance a faint low band of unresolved grey shoreline, and behind the birds a single tall pale slender vertical form fading almost entirely into the mist, unidentifiable, no more than a soft grey taper. Ornithological accuracy: black-headed gulls in non-breeding plumage. Clean white head with a small dark smudge behind and below the eye and a faint dusky crown wash — not a full dark hood. Pale dove-grey mantle and folded wing, white underparts and tail, dark slate-to-black primary tips showing at the rear of the folded wing. Slender dark-red to orange bill with a darker tip, held level. Bright orange-red legs and webbed feet, the strongest colour note in the picture. Small dark eye. Correct gull proportions, standing posture and bill geometry — a working field artist's anatomy, not stylised cartooning. Technique: transparent wet-in-wet washes with granulating pigment settling into the paper tooth. The entire upper sky left as bare paper or the faintest possible pearl-grey wash, with the flying gulls dropped in as swift soft-edged marks on damp paper so they blur and lose definition with distance. Deliberate unpainted white paper reserved across the standing birds' heads, breasts and underparts, modelled only with dilute cool grey shadow washes so the white reads as light rather than as paint. Hard-edged dry-brush accents used sparingly and only on the two or three nearest birds — bill, eye smudge, primary tips, the join of foot to stone. The quay laid as one broad warm-grey wash with a few dry-brush drags for the scuffed surface and two or three darker strokes for the joins and the shadowed edge. Visible paper grain, no outlines, no ink work. Palette: high-key, cold and nearly monochrome — pearl white, pale blue-grey, payne's grey, a warm putty-grey for the stone, slate for the wingtips, with a single saturated note of cadmium orange on the legs and bills. Overall very low-saturation, flat diffused winter light, no shadows cast. Mood: cold, patient, loafing. A page from a naturalist's field sketchbook rather than a finished gallery piece. NEGATIVE: no photorealism, no digital airbrush smoothness, no HDR, no vivid saturated colour, no blue sky, no sun, no visible horizon line, no identifiable buildings, towers or landmarks, no bridges, no boats, no masts with rigging, no people, no railings or bollards, no text, no watermark, no signature, no heavy black outlines, no cartoon or vector flat-fill styling, no opaque white gouache on the plumage, no full dark hoods on the gulls, no fused or malformed feet, no extra limbs, no incorrect gull anatomy.
