Laughing in the Sun
Sunlit laughing head garden ground. A Belle Epoque portrait, painted at speed.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: A close head-and-shoulders portrait in oil in the manner of Giovanni Boldini, painted alla prima on a vertical canvas. A young woman is caught mid-laugh, head turned away in three-quarter view and tipped slightly down, eyes crinkled and looking off to the left of the frame, mouth open in an unguarded smile with the teeth indicated by two or three light strokes rather than drawn. The whole expression is fleeting and animated — a moment seized, not posed. Her dark hair is swept back and up from the brow, painted as long raking strokes of blue-black, warm bitumen and burnt sienna, with a scatter of loose strands escaping across the temple and cheek and along the jaw, each one a single flicked dry-brush hair catching the light. A small pale earring is a single bright dab of light at the ear. Light is the subject: a strong warm sun rakes in from the left, blazing along the brow, the bridge of the nose, the upper lip and the crest of the cheekbone in loaded impasto white and warm ivory, while the far side of the face drops abruptly into deep warm shadow of grey-green, olive and umber. Broken dapple falls across the forehead and neck in soft irregular patches. Skin painted in silvery flesh tones, warm rose and ivory in the lit passages, cool grey-green in the half-shadow, with the transitions kept wet and blended rather than drawn. Her shoulder and upper chest fill the lower third of the canvas, a loose pale taupe and oyster blouse painted in broad simple planes of chalky warm grey and cream, the folds falling away from the neck as long swishing diagonal strokes, growing looser and more summary toward the bottom edge until the fabric dissolves into bare canvas. A fine chain at the throat is one thin scratched line of light. Background: no detail — a deep, dissolved mass of dark garden foliage, painted thinly in olive, moss and blackish green with a few brighter yellow-green scumbles where sun filters through leaves, entirely out of focus and reduced to tonal atmosphere, so the sunlit head reads brilliantly against it. Painterly treatment: whiplash bravura brushwork, wet-into-wet, rapid confident handling, visible canvas weave in the thin passages. The eyes, nose and mouth are brought to a fine tightly modelled finish; everything outward from the face grows looser and more gestural. No photographic detail, no digital smoothness, no outline, no hard edges. Clothed, warm, dignified portraiture. Palette: warm ivory, rose, silvery flesh, olive green, moss, blue-black, burnt sienna, chalky oyster and cream. Late nineteenth-century oil painting. Vertical 2:3 composition, head high in the frame, shoulder cropped at the lower left. NEGATIVE: (none)
