Sequin and Fur

Sequin fur studio portrait. A Belle Epoque portrait, painted at speed.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
A full-length Belle Époque society portrait in oil in the manner of Giovanni Boldini, painted on a tall vertical canvas. A young woman stands against a plain, luminous pale grey ground, leaning back with her weight on one shoulder, hips thrown forward, legs crossed at the ankle in a long serpentine S-curve that runs the whole height of the canvas. Her chin is lifted and turned away in cool hauteur, mouth a small crimson accent, dark tousled shoulder-length hair flying out at the edges in flicked dry-brush strokes. Tinted round spectacles sit across her eyes, painted as two pale rose-and-silver ovals with a single hard white glint on each lens. One arm is raised, fingers just touching the temple of the spectacles, the hand rendered in four or five confident tapering strokes; the other rests low on her waist, a small pale watch-face catching the light on that wrist.

Her short dress is a cascade of rose and coral sequins — painted not as individual discs but as a broken vertical rain of impasto dashes, dragged pink madder, cadmium rose, warm white and touches of violet-grey, with hard bright scumbles where the studio light rakes across the fabric and the whole surface flickering and dissolving toward the hem. Over it hangs an open white fur jacket, built from long loose swishing strokes of chalk white, pearl grey and cool blue shadow, the pelt indicated by drag and flick rather than by hair, the edges feathering out into the background so the silhouette breaks apart. Bare legs are modelled in silvery flesh tones with cool grey-green half-shadow, the lower calves left summary and unfinished, dissolving into the pale ground.

Painterly treatment: whiplash bravura brushwork, wet-into-wet, long swishing diagonals, elongation of the figure for elegance. The head, hand and upper chest are brought to a fine, tightly modelled finish while everything below the waist grows progressively looser and more gestural, dissolving into motion and bare canvas. Loaded impasto highlights on the cheekbone, lower lip, knuckles and the brightest sequins.

Setting and light: no interior detail — an empty, atmospheric studio ground of warm-cool grey, scumbled thinly so the canvas weave shows through, darkening slightly at the corners and around the figure to throw her forward. Cool even studio light from the front left, a soft cast shadow pooling behind her.

Palette: chalk white, pearl grey, warm ivory, rose madder, coral, crimson accent, cool blue-grey shadow. Late nineteenth-century oil painting, dry brush drag, visible canvas weave, no photographic detail, no digital smoothness, no outline. Clothed, elegant, dignified fashion portraiture, non-sexual. Vertical 2:3 composition, full figure centred with generous space above the head.
