Under the Arcade

Arcade portrait raised arm. A Belle Epoque portrait, painted at speed.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
A three-quarter-length Belle Époque portrait in oil in the manner of Giovanni Boldini, painted on a tall vertical canvas. A young woman stands in soft daylight, hips squared to the viewer and torso slightly turned, one arm lifted and bent so the hand disappears into the crown of her hair, the raised sleeve making a broad diagonal sweep across the upper left of the canvas; the other arm falls loosely to her side. Her head tilts a little, chin level, expression cool and self-possessed, lips a soft rose accent, dark brows and lashes stated with two or three decisive strokes.

Her hair is the centrepiece — a great cascading mass of dark curls falling well below the shoulder on one side, painted as coiling ribbons of blue-black, warm bitumen brown and burnt sienna, each spiral a single twisting loaded stroke, the outer edges flying loose into flicked dry-brush wisps that catch the light and break apart against the background.

She wears a loose blue-grey shirt, open at the front and knotted low, painted as broad planes of slate, pale teal-grey and cool white where the light strikes the folds, the sleeves billowing in long swishing strokes with pearl highlights along the creases; beneath it a dark black bodice reduced to a soft mass of warm black and umber. Pale worn denim below the waist, rendered as chalky slate and oyster-grey slashes with the seams and small metal fastenings suggested by single bright dashes, the trousers growing looser and more summary toward the bottom of the canvas until they dissolve into bare ground. Modest, decorous fashion portraiture, clothed, elegant, non-sexual.

Background: a long stone arcade receding sharply into the distance behind her, arch after arch in diminishing perspective, painted thinly and atmospherically in warm greys, terracotta and dusty ochre, entirely out of focus and dissolved — architecture as tonal mass and rhythm rather than detail, with the sky beyond a flat luminous chalk white burning out at the upper left. The far arches soften almost to nothing.

Painterly treatment: whiplash bravura brushwork, wet-into-wet, sweeping diagonals, slight elegant elongation of the figure. The face, the raised forearm and the near shoulder are brought to a fine tightly modelled finish; everything outward and downward from there grows progressively looser and more gestural. Loaded impasto highlights on the cheekbone, the bridge of the nose, the lower lip, the sleeve folds and the brightest curls. Silvery flesh tones, warm ivory and rose in the face, cool grey-green in the half-shadows.

Palette: warm grey, dusty terracotta, chalk white, slate blue, teal-grey, blue-black, burnt sienna, rose accent. Late nineteenth-century oil painting, dry brush drag, visible canvas weave in the thin passages, no photographic detail, no digital smoothness, no outline. Vertical 2:3 composition, figure filling the central column with the arcade running away behind her.
