Boldini vintage shop portrait. A Belle Epoque portrait, painted at speed.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
A Belle Époque society oil portrait in the manner of Giovanni Boldini, painted from life on a large vertical canvas. A young woman stands three-quarter length, weight settled on one hip, torso turned slightly away while her face returns toward the viewer with a calm, level, faintly amused gaze. Long dark hair falls straight past her shoulders, rendered in long sweeping strokes of blue-black and warm umber with a few flicked strands catching the light. She wears a plain dark long-sleeved top, its blacks built from layered warm and cool darks rather than flat pigment, and pale blue high-waisted denim trousers painted as a loose cascade of chalky slate, oyster grey and cool white slashes that dissolve into the shadow at the canvas edge. One hand rests low against her thigh, fingers summarily indicated with three or four confident strokes.

Painterly treatment: whiplash bravura brushwork, wet-into-wet, long swishing diagonal strokes that stretch and elongate the figure and blur the lower body into motion while the head and collarbones are brought to a fine, tightly modelled finish. Impasto highlights along the cheekbone, the bridge of the nose, the lower lip and the shoulder seam, laid on with a loaded brush. Silvery flesh tones, warm ivory and rose in the face, cool grey-green in the shadows.

Setting: an interior of dim, dissolved atmosphere — the cluttered brown-black depths of an old repair workshop suggested rather than described, with the ghosts of stacked wooden cabinets, a brass wheel and a hanging lamp emerging as blurred tonal masses. A single warm lamp burns upper right as a hot amber glow with a halo scumbled into the surrounding dark, throwing a soft rim of light along the far side of her hair and jaw. Deep chiaroscuro: the background falls away to near-black at the corners, focusing all luminosity on the face and the pale denim.

Palette: bitumen brown, warm sepia, ember orange, blue-black, silvery greys and chalk white. Visible canvas weave in the thinner passages. Late nineteenth-century oil painting, dry brush drag, no photographic detail, no digital smoothness, no outline. Clothed, dignified, non-sexual portraiture. Vertical 2:3 composition, figure occupying the central third, generous dark headroom above.
