The Sign-Hung Lane

Sign hung market lane at midday. A hyperrealist painting of a photographed place.

How this was made

This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.

THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS

PROMPT

POSITIVE:
Recreate this photograph as a large-scale contemporary hyperrealist oil painting on canvas, in the tradition of urban landscape painting that renders a whole working street as an inventory of separately resolved detail.

Viewpoint: standing in the middle of a narrow commercial lane in an old provincial town, looking straight down its length, the walls close on both sides and the lane opening toward trees and daylight at the far end.

Left side: a run of three- and four-storey buildings with rendered upper floors in cream and pale grey, shallow balconies with metal railings, air-conditioning units, and a ground floor of small shopfronts with roller shutters, glazed frontages and stepped thresholds. Large flat rectangular sign panels project on brackets from the upper facades and hang over the lane; a smaller freestanding A-board stands on the pavement. A striped fabric awning runs out over one shopfront further down.

Right side: a dense stack of older masonry and concrete frontages, more heavily weathered, hung with an even thicker cluster of projecting sign panels at several heights - tall vertical boards, horizontal fascias and small bracket signs - overlapping each other and the tangle of overhead cables strung across the lane. Metal shutters, a fabric canopy, and a striped traffic cone at the kerb.

Centre: the lane surface, worn and patched dark asphalt with irregular repairs, cracks and sunken drain covers, filling the entire lower third of the canvas in a strong converging perspective. Small saloon cars and a van are parked nose-in along the left; more vehicles sit further down. A dark green shade sail is stretched across the lane at mid depth. Beyond it a large broad-crowned tree in full bright green leaf closes the view, with further low buildings and daylight behind.

Figures: a scattered crowd occupies the middle distance - people seated on low stools at small tables outside the shops on both sides, others standing and walking down the lane. All are rendered small to middling in scale and are seen from behind, in profile lost to shadow, or with heads turned away; their clothing, posture and grouping are fully drawn but no face is resolved into recognisable features.

Painterly treatment: oil on canvas with an enamel-smooth surface and no visible brush marks - the illusion of photography achieved entirely by paint. Detail is uniform edge to edge: every asphalt patch and crack in the foreground, every sign bracket and cable overhead, every leaf mass on the distant tree, and every figure in the middle distance are resolved with identical precision. No depth-of-field falloff, no atmospheric softening, no blur anywhere.

Light: flat bright midday overcast, soft and even, no hard cast shadows, no glare. The sky at the top and the daylight at the far end are pale luminous near-white that still holds tone and never clips to blank paper. The shaded lower lane retains full colour and internal drawing and never collapses to black.

Colour: heightened beyond the photograph without becoming garish. Cream, sand and grey render; oxide red, deep blue and white on the sign panels; charcoal asphalt; bright sap green and chartreuse in the tree; scattered saturated notes in the clothing of the crowd.

Content clearance: no legible text, lettering, numerals, words, characters or phone numbers anywhere in the frame. Every sign panel, fascia, A-board, awning valance and shutter is rendered as a plain flat block of colour, or as simple abstract geometric ornament - bands, chevrons, borders - containing no character shapes of any kind. No business names, no hotel names, no brand marks, no logos, no emblems. No vehicle manufacturer badges - render grilles and tailgates smooth and unmarked. No registration plates - render every plate area as a blank painted rectangle. No flags. No posters or stickers. No face in the painting is resolved into individual recognisable features.

NEGATIVE:
