Slow Water
Long exposure seascape at dusk. A hyperrealist painting of a photographed place.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Recreate this photograph as a large-scale contemporary hyperrealist oil painting on canvas, in the tradition of landscape painting that renders solid form at microscopic resolution while painting moving water as smooth precisely drawn flow. Subject: a rocky tropical shore at dusk, wide-angle, low viewpoint close to the wet sand. A large weathered sandstone bluff occupies the upper left, its stratified faces lit warm ochre and rust with deep fissures and overhangs. In the middle distance a low reef of dark jagged basalt runs diagonally from left of centre to the right frame edge, wave-cut into sharp fluted ridges and pitted hollows. Beyond it, a small steep-sided sea stack rises from the water at centre, crowned with a dense tuft of wind-bent tropical trees and a lone leaning palm, its silhouette dark against the sky. Low scattered cumulus sits on the horizon at right. The lower half of the frame is a wide sweep of wet sand and retreating surf running out toward the bottom right corner. Water treatment: the sea and the retreating wash are painted as long-exposure flow - smooth continuous laminar bands of pale cream, dove grey and blue-white sweeping in unbroken curves across the sand, with no droplets, no bubbles, no frozen splash and no rippled surface texture. These bands have crisp drawn edges where they meet sand and rock, and internal tonal modelling within each band. The flow is a designed shape, painted with total precision, not a soft photographic smear. Solid form treatment: everything that does not move is rendered at maximum resolution - every stratum line and fracture in the bluff, every ridge, pit and mineral stain on the basalt reef, every frond of the trees on the sea stack. No softening on any rock surface anywhere in the frame. Painterly treatment: oil on canvas with an enamel-smooth surface and no visible brush marks - the illusion of photography achieved entirely by paint. No depth-of-field falloff: the far horizon and the near sand are equally resolved. Sky and colour: an afterglow sky graded from dusty violet and mauve at the top through rose to a hot band of amber and apricot along the horizon. Heightened beyond the photograph without becoming garish. Warm ochre and rust in the lit bluff, cool grey-mauve in the shadowed reef, tawny gold in the wet sand catching the sky, and the flow bands reading almost white against it. Light: the last low light after sunset, warm from the right, no sun disc, soft and even with no hard cast shadows and no glare. Content clearance: no text, lettering, signage, structures, boats, people, footprints or litter anywhere in the frame. An entirely natural and unpeopled shore. NEGATIVE: text, lettering, signage, logos, watermarks, people, footprints, boats, buildings, litter, visible brushstrokes, impasto, painterly looseness, illustration, cartoon, watercolour, sketch, HDR halo, oversharpened edges, lens flare, sun rays, sun disc, bloom, chromatic aberration, vignette, depth-of-field blur, bokeh, frozen splash, water droplets, spray, foam bubbles, choppy water, grain, noise, jpeg artefacts
