The Braided River
Aerial alpine valley with braided river. A hyperrealist painting of a photographed place.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Recreate this photograph as a large-scale contemporary hyperrealist oil painting on canvas, in the tradition of aerial-view painting that renders a whole landform from altitude as interlocking pattern. Viewpoint: from high above the valley floor, looking straight up the axis of a steep glacial valley, the two flanking walls converging symmetrically toward a distant head. A narrow band of sky occupies only the top eighth of the frame. Centre and foreground: a broad braided outwash plain runs from the bottom edge of the canvas up through the middle of the valley - a wide flat bed of pale grey glacial gravel across which dozens of meltwater channels split, rejoin and interweave in a complex anastomosing network, the water reading as fine pale turquoise and silver threads against the stone. Low gravel bars and vegetated islands divide the braids. This channel network is the principal subject of the painting and carries the greatest concentration of detail. Flanks: steep valley walls rise on both sides, clothed in brilliant alpine pasture - a continuous carpet of grass in dozens of separated greens, from acid chartreuse in full sun to deep bottle green in shade, broken by scree runs, rock ribs, boulder fields, low scrub patches and dark stands of spruce. A thin pale hiking path traces a long sinuous line up the right-hand slope and a second along the left, each a single continuous ribbon. Middle distance: the valley narrows and the outwash meets the foot of a long reservoir lake of intense opaque turquoise, its glacial-flour colour flat and saturated, running back between the walls with a small delta of pale silt at its near end and belts of conifer along its shores. Distance: beyond the lake the valley head rises into a cirque of grey rock peaks streaked with snowfields and small remnant glaciers, ridge lines serrated, scree fans spilling below. Sky: a narrow band of broken cumulus at the top, bright white and grey, each cloud rendered crisply and structurally with drawn edges and modelled internal form, never as soft airbrushed vapour. Painterly treatment: oil on canvas with an enamel-smooth surface and no visible brush marks - the illusion of photography achieved entirely by paint. Detail is uniform edge to edge: every gravel bar and braid channel in the foreground, every rock rib on the flanks, and every snowfield and ridge on the furthest peaks are resolved with identical precision. No depth-of-field falloff, no blur anywhere. Critical treatment of distance: no atmospheric perspective. The far peaks and the valley head are NOT hazy, blue-grey or veiled - they hold their true grey, umber and white local colour and their full surface detail, individual scree fans and rock ribs readable to the horizon. Depth is conveyed by scale and overlap alone, never by softening or a blue veil. Critical treatment of shadow: cloud shadow falls in broad patches across the slopes, but the shaded ground retains full internal drawing, colour and texture - every rock, scrub clump and grass gradation still visible. Deep tone, never empty tone, and never flat black. Colour: heightened beyond the photograph without becoming garish or artificially graded. Chartreuse, sap green and bottle green in the pasture; pale bone grey in the gravel; opaque turquoise in the lake; silver and aquamarine in the meltwater; grey rock, umber scree and chalk snow in the peaks. Light: bright high summer sun broken by passing cloud, hard and clear where it falls. Content clearance: no text, lettering, signage, numerals, vehicles, buildings, dams, power lines, pylons, boats, people or brand marks anywhere in the frame. The hiking paths are the only trace of human presence. NEGATIVE: text, lettering, signage, numerals, logos, brand marks, watermarks, people, vehicles, buildings, dam, power lines, pylons, boats, visible brushstrokes, impasto, painterly looseness, illustration, cartoon, watercolour, sketch, satellite map, map labels, atmospheric perspective, blue distance haze, fog, mist, low cloud in valley, heavy colour grading, oversaturated green, HDR halo, oversharpened edges, lens flare, sun rays, bloom, chromatic aberration, vignette, depth-of-field blur, motion blur, bokeh, tilt-shift, crushed shadows, flat black, grain, noise, jpeg artefacts
