The Brimmed Hat
The Brimmed Hat. A clothed portrait study after Schiele: nervous broken contour, patchy gouache wash, and large areas of bare paper left as the ground.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Repaint this photograph as an Egon Schiele portrait drawing, Vienna c. 1915, in the manner of his clothed portrait studies of Edith. Three-quarter-length study of a young adult woman, fully clothed in a black short-sleeved top, a wide woven belt with a round buckle and a long pale cream skirt, wearing a black brimmed hat, holding small round sunglasses in one lowered hand; strictly non-sexual, no nudity, decorous and restrained, modest framing. Nervous, angular, broken black ink contour line describing the hat brim, jaw, neck, shoulders, arms and hands with wiry expressive precision and deliberate breaks in the line. The black top and the belt reduced to flat hard-edged graphic shapes, the skirt to a few angular folds. Thin patchy gouache and watercolour washes in muted ochre, dull brick red, olive and cold grey, leaving large areas of untouched cream paper as the ground. Skin blotchy with reddish and greenish accents at the cheek, forearm and knuckles. Long hair as flat dark angular masses. Mannered elongated arms, bony expressive splayed fingers, tense alert asymmetric expression. Remove the landscape and building entirely, empty paper background, raw and expressive. NEGATIVE: (none)
