All in White
All in White. A clothed portrait study after Schiele: nervous broken contour, patchy gouache wash, and large areas of bare paper left as the ground.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Repaint this photograph as an Egon Schiele full-length standing figure drawing, Vienna c. 1915, in the manner of his clothed portrait studies. An adult woman with long straight dark hair standing full length, weight on one leg, one arm folded across her waist and the other raised with the hand resting against her cheek. Fully clothed and modestly covered in a long-sleeved white top and white full-length trousers with strappy heeled sandals; strictly non-sexual and non-erotic, no nudity, decorous and restrained. Nervous angular broken black ink contour line describing the jaw, neck, shoulders, both arms, the folded hands with bony elongated fingers, the hips and the long legs, drawn with wiry precision and deliberate breaks in the line. Because the clothing is white, carry it almost entirely on line weight against the bare cream paper, with only the faintest cold grey-blue wash in the fold shadows at the elbow, waist and knee. Thin patchy gouache washes on the skin of the face and hands in muted ochre, dull brick red and cold green accents at the cheek and knuckles. Long dark hair as flat angular masses. Remove the green backdrop and floor entirely; empty cream paper background, mannered elongated limbs, tense guarded expression, raw and expressive, signature block in the lower corner. NEGATIVE: (none)
