POSITIVE: Place this Egon Schiele ink-and-gouache figure drawing inside a Giovanni Battista Piranesi Carceri d'invenzione imaginary prison, c. 1761. Keep the figure exactly as she is drawn: the same standing pose with both arms raised to the back of her head, the same clothes, the same nervous broken black ink contour and flat patchy muted wash, still reading as a hand-drawn figure rather than an engraved one, retaining her faint ochre and blue-grey colour so she stands apart from the monochrome world around her. Around her construct a vast cavernous vaulted prison interior in black ink etching: colossal stone arches receding into darkness, massive piers, heavy timber beams, contradictory staircases climbing in impossible directions, hanging ropes, chains, pulleys and iron rings, catwalks and galleries at implausible angles. Rendered entirely in dense expressive cross-hatching and burin line on aged cream laid paper, deep velvety black shadow pooling in the vaults, brilliant untouched paper where light falls, no colour in the architecture.
