Panama City survived a pirate's fire in 1671 by rebuilding two miles down the coast behind a new wall, and the anthem carries its rebuilt neighborhoods -- Casco Viejo, Santa Ana, Rio Abajo, San Miguelito and Paitilla -- past in one breath, to a canal whose staircase of water runs entirely on rain as ships rise toward a Pacific sunrise.
