Fringed Red Tulips
Fringed red tulips. A botanical watercolour study.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Botanical watercolour painting on hot-pressed paper of two open fringed tulips (Tulipa, Fringed group), worked in the contemporary British botanical illustration manner: transparent layered glazes, no pencil outlines, no black, no ink linework, form built entirely by tone and colour. Subject: two blooms fully splayed open, the nearer one lower left and seen almost face-on into its throat, the second upper right and turned three-quarters away. Six broad tepals each, cupped and slightly reflexed, the outer surfaces catching light and the inner surfaces falling into shadow. Colour of the petals: built in transparent layers, never flat and never opaque — a warm underwash of cadmium and gold at the tepal base glazed over with scarlet and vermilion through the body, deepening to alizarin crimson and a cool wine-violet in the folds, the shaded interior and where one tepal overlaps another. Fine parallel striations of slightly deeper red run lengthwise up each tepal. A pale bloom of reflected light along the outer curve, lifted softly rather than left as hard white. The fringe is the defining feature: every tepal margin dissolves into a dense crystalline comb of fine hair-like filaments, painted as individual dry-brush strokes with a fine brush — scarlet at the base of each filament fading to pale coral and warm cream at the tips, hundreds of them, irregular in length, catching the light so the whole rim reads as frost or coral rather than a torn edge. Filaments must stay separate and legible, never a soft blur, never a scalloped or serrated outline. Centre: a clean six-lobed yellow blotch at the base of the throat in cadmium and lemon, bleeding into orange where it meets the red. A stout cream-white pistil with a three-lobed crested stigma stands central; six flattened cream filaments radiate from it, each carrying a long chocolate-brown anther, some dusted with pale pollen. This small area holds the sharpest detail on the sheet. Foliage: broad strap-shaped tulip leaves in cool blue-grey green, glaucous with a matte waxy bloom, curving and twisting with a soft central fold, veins running lengthwise as faint parallel lines. Greens mixed from ultramarine and raw sienna rather than tube green. One or two leaves cross behind and below the blooms; a smooth pale green stem carries each flower. Light and shadow: bright directional sunlight from the upper left. Shadows are coloured, not grey — violet and deep crimson within the reds, blue-grey and sap green in the foliage. Background: clean untouched paper, with only the faintest wet-in-wet whisper of dove grey behind the upper blooms so they do not float. Leaf tips soften and lose themselves into the white at the sheet edges. Botanically accurate, luminous, crisp edge control, extremely high detail in the fringed margins and the stamens, softer handling at the paper margins. Fine art botanical study, gallery quality, no frame, no signature, no text. NEGATIVE: photograph, photorealism, 3D render, oil paint, acrylic, gouache opacity, opaque body colour, flat unmodulated red, black shadows, black outlines, ink contour lines, heavy impasto, digital airbrush gradients, bokeh, lens blur, vignette, smooth scalloped petal edge, blurred or clumped fringe, ruffled parrot tulip, wall texture, grass, frame, border, watermark, signature, text, cartoon, vector flat art
