Dust on Everything
The same group stripped of gloss and reflection, reduced to chalky matte volumes in close-valued greys, ochres and putty.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Repaint this still life as a Giorgio Morandi oil painting, Bologna c. 1955. A cluster of five bottles of different heights and one rounded fruit, grouped closely together and seen straight on, frontally, in shallow compressed space against a soft indeterminate background of nearly the same tonality as the table. Remove the dried twigs and the red lighting completely. Strip out all transparency, gloss, sparkle and reflection: the bottles become opaque, chalky, dry matte volumes as if coated in fine dust. Muted close-valued palette of dusty grey-green, pale ochre, warm putty, bone white, soft rose and a single dull faded brick red for the fruit; almost no tonal contrast and only the faintest shadow. Soft even light, no drama. Visible dry brushmarks, thinned scumbled paint, slightly wavering hand-drawn contours, deliberately unpolished edges. Meditative, austere, quietly abstracted, small intimate canvas. NEGATIVE: (none)
