Chalk Cylinder
The same glass reduced to a dry matte cylinder in dusty close-valued colour, all transparency and sparkle stripped away.
How this was made
This piece began with a photograph and a written instruction. Both are kept, so the record is complete rather than flattering.
THE PROMPT AND THE SETTINGS
PROMPT
POSITIVE: Repaint this still life as a Giorgio Morandi oil painting, Bologna c. 1955. Reduce the tall glass and its contents to a simple, frontal, almost cylindrical volume standing on a plain pale slab, seen straight on in shallow compressed space with a soft indeterminate background of the same tonality. Strip out all gloss, sparkle, reflection and transparency: the surfaces are chalky, dry and matte, as if lightly coated in dust. Muted close-valued palette of dusty grey-green, pale ochre, warm putty, bone white and soft rose, with almost no tonal contrast and no strong shadow. Soft even light from the left, no drama. Visible dry brushmarks, thinned scumbled paint, slightly wavering hand-drawn contours, deliberately unpolished edges. Meditative, austere, quietly abstracted from observation, small intimate canvas. NEGATIVE: (none)
